Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron BaltimoreLike the real Lord Baltimore, the fictionalized version is rather scandalous, perhaps more so, or perhaps developing his infamy earlier than the real one. In the chapter titled “Lord Baltimore” in the second volume, Lord Baltimore receives a missive from his half-brother who lives in Maryland to describe the widow of the previous governor and is intrigued enough to actually visit his domain in the New World. The real Baltimore never bothered. After wangling an invitation into the widow’s home, he sneaks into her bedroom at night and forces himself upon her. Again, the real Lord Baltimore was at least accused of such things. While the widow is still in shock and blaming herself the next morning, her great-grandfather, Matthew West shows up and, because of her odd state, reads her mind to find out what is wrong. This then leads to a rather violent campaign for the reformation of Lord Baltimore carried out by West and several of his descendents. This campaign, in turn, leads to the much-humbled Lord Baltimore proposing marriage to the young widow to make things right. In reality, Lord Baltimore never had a legitimate son, so there was no Seventh Baron Baltimore. In the fictional world of the Hidden Angels Series, there is a Seventh Baron Baltimore, and he becomes the Proprietor of Maryland before the American Revolutionary War. The re-incorporation of Maryland leads to a de facto hereditary monarchy as one of the states within the United States of America. This will have many implications later in the series. |
