The Frog MenIn the second volume during the resumption of the war between Spain and Gath on the island we know as Cuba, we have the first active and relatively open involvement of Angels in the series. Before that, Matthew West and some of his Angel progeny use their powers in war and other situations, but generally try not to be too blatant about it. In the Second Spanish-Gath War, we see the first use of masks and costumes by Angels, as well as seeing the origin of the term Angels for those with active psychic powers. It is during this war that the Angel known as Joseph the Dreamer (Abraham Jacob FitzGoliath - I2595) creates the Frog Men. It is a somewhat unintentional creation and certainly their release into the oceans and ability to breed true was not intentional. Joseph the Dreamer was creating warships for his nation, using his Angelic (psychic) powers. The ships were created many miles out to sea. To get them into Gath’s capital city’s harbor, Joseph dreamed up the Frog Men. They boarded the ships, sailed them into the harbor, and then slipped over the sides and returned to the ocean. What Joseph did not do was to then dissolve his erstwhile sailors back to their constituent components. Thus they continued on, discovering what it is to live, eating, breeding, learning, and passing on to that great frog pond in the sky, or wherever Heaven is for Frog Men. They are neither true fish, nor true amphibians. They have both gills and lungs and can operate above or below the sea. Primarily, they live below the sea and do not interact with humans for many decades, except under the compulsion they felt upon their initial creation. They will not appear again in the series until at least the eighth volume, and will not be known to man other than as occasional sightings by sailors and legends. By that time, their creator, Joseph the Dreamer, will be dead, and there will be no unmaking his accidental creations. |
